Nest Thermostat Review

Do you ever wish that the gadgets in your house could program themselves? Like a dishwasher that knows when to start or a thermostat that changes with the weather? I don’t know about the dishwasher part but I’ve found a thermostat that really understands me. It’s called the Nest Thermostat. It looks different for starters but what it does  has changed the way I look at heating and air conditioning.

The first thing I noticed when I took it out of the box was the shape. I’ve never had a round thermostat before so I was concerned about how to install it. It’s also bigger than the old one. I can see the digital display clearly from across the room. I used the included trim plate to cover the holes in the wall from the old thermostat because I’m not great with spackle. The Nest thermostat came with easy directions and even had a cute little screwdriver to make the wires easier to deal with. All in all, it took about 30 minutes for me to install the nest thermostat and that includes the time it took me to find the right breaker switch. Here’s the cool part: it knows what I like! The Nest thermostat learned that my alarm goes off at 6am and I like the house at a cozy 78 degrees. I leave to get to work by 8am so I turn the heat down to 68 degrees. My kids and I are home by 6pm so the heat goes back up to 72 degrees and we sleep better when the house is about 70 degrees. It took my Nest thermostat about five days to learn my routine and now it does all this by itself! It knows our schedule better than my husband. We went out of town last weekend so I set the Nest thermostat to the Auto-Away setting to save energy while we were gone. It took about three seconds and I didn’t have to worry about it all weekend long.

On our way back into town, I used my smartphone to turn the temperature in our house back up so we had a warm welcome. That’s when I figured out what the Leaf icon was all about. I saw this leaf symbol a few times but with kids to chase after I didn’t have a chance to investigate. It turns out, this leaf is a reward for saving energy and the Nest app on my phone gives me tips on how to save even more. It tracks how much energy we use on a daily and monthly basis and provides suggestions on how we can save even more. I love this thing.
